King billy lyrics

We spent most of the day running around town completing all the last minute jobs and buying all the ‘absolute essentials’ that were hitherto unthought of. Even when you’re convinced you have thought of everything and there isn’t a single further thing that needs doing a boat always seems to have an uncanny ability to find you a job; a final quick check over all of the electrical systems onboard the previous night threw us into a panic on discovering a non-functioning masthead light. Having recently been drilling holes in the mast for a new trysail track I was convinced I must have severed the mast cable which would have been a massive headache on departure day! Luckily it turned out to be a simple blown bulb and so first thing I was out buying a new bulb and then up the mast to complete the job.

We eventually cast off at 6 pm after a couple of last minute nerve calmers at the club bar before the final off. We sounded our airhorn goodbye as we left our little berth for the last time and motored out of the calm waters of the marina and into a gentle NW evening breeze on the Derwent River. Our fellow live-aboard friends, Tom and Christine, heard our final farewell horn and made a sprint to the end of the breakwater wall for a heart-warming goodbye as we hoisted the main and sailed off into the dusk.

King Billy Day

The sun quickly set and with the overcast evening it was suddenly very dark as we sailed gently south towards Bruny Island. The city lights and the silhouetted outline of Mt Wellington made a beautiful farewell sight as we sailed quickly away from our beloved Hobart. The breeze soon dropped out and we were left drifting mid-river. We watched the lights of a large cruise ship disappear into the distance as it turned south-east out into Storm bay and thought it an appropriate moment to pop a bottle of bubbly that our crew, Lisa, had kindly brought along to celebrate our long-awaited departure. As we sat sipping Champagne and nibbling cheese and apple aboard our little ship we wondered at who was having the grander time; us sea vagabonds or all those paying passengers on the luxury liner? After a couple of hours we finally dropped anchor in amongst a handful of other moored boats in Quarentine bay on the North Island of Bruny and fell into bed exhausted. It was certainly a pretty good start to the trip!
